Lath and Plaster involves the use of timber laths nailed apart to timber studding. Traditional lime renders, mixed with animal hair (or equivalent) are used as a backing coat. A finishing coat of fine putty lime & plaster is applied to create a silky smooth, egg shell finish.
Apart from being stronger & reducing the risk of cracking, lath-and-plaster is superior to materials such as plasterboard for its sound-proofing properties. Traditional lime plaster is much denser than the gypsum from which plasterboard is made, & this helps absorb low-frequency sound.
